Indian head massage (sometimes known as Champissage™) is performed on the head but also includes the shoulders, neck and upper arms. The treatment focuses on these important energy centres of the body and is deeply relaxing helping to calm the mind. Working with a gentle rhythm it helps relieve muscular tension, aids relaxation, improves blood flow to the brain and stimulates the hair follicles.
Head massage dates back over a thousand years and was originally developed by women to beautify and strengthen their hair. They would use different oils such as sesame, coconut, olive oil, buttermilk and herbal oils according to what was available in the season. For more information see here.
These days the therapy has been developed to incorporate the upper back, shoulders, neck, upper arms and face (originally developed by Norendra Mehta). It is believed that by treating these important energy centres the whole body benefits.
